Brendan Joel

Brendan Joel Hildebrandt is a director and cinematographer based in Perth, Western Australia, creating stories that explore the emotional and imaginative layers of life — sometimes light, sometimes dark, often with a touch of the unexpected.

In his early career he collaborated with local Australian artists, including The Voice 2018 winner Sam Perry, on music videos and experimental visual projects, developing a distinctive visual style.

A graduate of the WA Screen Academy with a Master’s in Screen Studies, Brendan specialised in cinematography. His work on the short film Spiral earned both a Silver ACS Award and the Channel 9 Award of Excellence.

In 2021 his debut documentary Dr. Russell’s Imaginarium premiered nationally on SBS. He followed this with World of Curiosities (2024), a whimsical factual web series exploring unusual histories, awarded the WA Screen Culture Award for Innovation in Web Series.

Brendan is currently developing a slate of original films that blend emotionally grounded characters with imaginative storytelling. He continues to work as a freelance cinematographer and on factual projects through his banner, Stir Films.
